Vasoolraja is a Tamil movie directed by Vaali. This film has Sathyaraj playing the role of the lead protagonist in it. The film, after being in production for many years, had its theatrical release on 18 February 2018 to mixed reviews and poor box-office performance. Vasoolraja MBBS is an upcoming Tamil medical thriller starring Sathyaraj in the title role. A look-alike of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, Amala Paul plays the antagonist in this movie. The movie also stars Prakash Raj, Delhi Ganesh and Santhanam in the supporting roles. On 28 January 2008, Sathyaraj announced that he would work with director Vaali for a film titled "Vasoolraja" produced by K. Balaji on his production banner Kavithalayaa Productions. The title was derived from the name of the surgeon Raja Vasudevan. The film was initially launched with an muhurath on 27 August 2008 at Srinivasa Kalyana Mandapam at Chennai with Cinesoft Industries Limited as distributor. The first look poster of the film was released on the same day by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. The release of the first look poster intended that Sathyaraj would be portraying the role of a surgeon in this film. In March 2009, Balaji announced that he had sold Kavithalayaa Productions to Abinaya Vijayendra Prasad. Since Balaji was in-charge of Kavithalayaa Productions when Vaali had approached him for this project, Vaali decided to wait until the launch of "Vasoolraja". In August 2012, Balaji announced that the film's shooting had been completed and it would be released during the second quarter of 2013. But it was delayed as Vaali ran into technical problems and then Balaji suffered a serious illness that left him bedridden. The makers initially planned to begin its filming in February 2013 but were delayed as Balaji was ill. The producers had to take the help of Sathyaraj's younger brother Vivek Prasanna and director Gokul after Sathyaraj so decided to postpone the launch. The producers approached the director to depict the movie with a logistical problem in mind. He claimed that he had planned it in this manner so as to depict the character portrayed by Sathyaraj accurately through the actor's looks. Sathyaraj changed his look for Vasoolraja MBBS before its release. The makers had difficulties in casting Amala Paul after she refused to work with Vaali after Sathyaraj's project Pranitha Veedu (2011) failed at box office. She was initially selected for an important role but due to her reluctance, they decided to opt out of her selection and went on to cast Delhi Ganesh for the same role.
